Family-centered inpatient care

No parent wants to hear that their child needs to be hospitalized. We know it can be overwhelming when your child needs medical services in the hospital. At St. Luke’s, our team of expertly trained pediatric hospitalists are in house 24/7 to ensure that your child has access to the best pediatric care. Our inpatient physicians collaborate with all of St. Luke’s pediatric specialists to ensure the delivery of high quality care for your child. Our child friend environment promotes healing and reduces anxiety for children who need to be hospitalized.

Overview

The Inpatient Pediatric Unit at St. Luke’s cares for children from birth through adolescence with acute illness or injury. Staffed around the clock by board-certified pediatric hospitalists and specially trained nurses, our inpatient pediatric unit provides a wide range of services–including disease diagnosis, monitoring, treatment and management of chronic or complex issues. To provide the most comprehensive care, our expert pediatricians will work with you to create a treatment plan that fits the whole family.

Services offered

Your child has access to world-class providers, research, and innovation at St. Luke’s. Our inpatient unit offers the following services—and more—to promote good health and a smooth recovery:

Inpatient hemodialysis
For children with kidney conditions, we provide dialysis and disease management in collaboration with the area’s only pediatric nephrologist.

EEG / neurologic monitoring
For children with neurological conditions like epilepsy, we provide comprehensive diagnostics and monitoring.

Respiratory therapy
For children needing respiratory care, we provide support for viral or bacterial pneumonia.

Endocrinology support
For children with endocrinology conditions, we provide education for new-onset Diabetes Mellitus Type I and both growth and hormone testing.

Multidisciplinary consultations
For children with multiple medical conditions, we provide consultations with a variety of specialists—including pediatric cardiologists, pulmonologists, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists and more.

Anesthesiology support
For children receiving anesthesia, our pediatric anesthesiologists provide specialized preparation and recovery.

Comprehensive support services
Our inpatient team frequently collaborates with pediatric pharmacology, pediatric physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and nutrition services.

Treatment room
A treatment room is utilized on the unit for any needed procedures to keep the patient room as a separate “safe” space for recovery.

Pet therapy
This service provides pet therapy to aid treatment and recovery.

24/7 hospitalist support
All children have access to pediatric hospitalists twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Family-centered care

At St. Luke’s, you and your family are members of your child’s care team. That’s why we make receiving treatment easy, accessible and collaborative. Our inpatient unit offers the following amenities to help you stay comfortable and involved:

Individual rooms
Your child will have a specialized space for treatment with homelike amenities for them to recover in a comfortable environment.

Translation services
We provide translators (as needed) to ensure clear and comfortable communication.

Family-centered rounds
Families are encouraged to participate in daily rounding with their child's care team.

24/7 visiting hours
To support recovery, we provide around-the-clock visiting hours for you to be with your child.

Playroom
When children are feeling well enough, a play room is available on the unit with interactive games and toys for children to use with their families to provide a distraction from the hospital environment.

Child-friendly activities
Each patient room has video game connectivity, as well as books and toys available. Children can request to have the food they like and will be able to keep snacks and food in their in-room refrigerator (provided items are approved for their specific diet).

Family accommodations
Sleeper sofas, parent TVs, and showers are available in each patient room so parents can spend the most time with their child during recovery.

Family discharge preparation
Our inpatient team will work with your family, your child’s pediatrician, and any needed specialists to ensure that all follow up care is coordinated before discharge from the hospital. Detailed discharge instructions and educational materials are provided to patients upon discharge.

Upon discharge from the Inpatient Pediatric Unit, our team will coordinate care with your child’s St. Luke’s pediatrician and any needed pediatric specialists, many of which are located in St. Luke’s Pediatric Specialty Center.
