St. Luke’s University Health Network

Richard A. Anderson

A Message from the President & CEO of St. Luke's University Health Network

I am very proud of St. Luke's University Health Network, our facilities, our services, and especially our employees and our physicians. It is the special people at St. Luke's that make the difference when you need care.

Tradition of Health Care in the Lehigh Valley

You might not know that St. Luke's was originally founded in 1872 to care for the workers at the Steel Foundries in Bethlehem. Today, a century and a half later, St. Luke's has grown into one of the state's largest health care networks. We provide service at more than 350+ locations that span 60 miles north to south and serve more than one million people living in eleven counties. Our 2,200+ physicians, 20,000+ employees and more than 2,100 volunteers provide overnight care for tens of thousands of patients a year and hundreds of thousands of outpatients. As a health network and major teaching facility, we also have the resources required to train the next generation of health care providers. Nursing students train in the nation’s longest continuously operating School of Nursing, established in 1884, as well as in programs conducted collaboratively with area colleges. For physicians seeking additional training, we offer more than 470 intern/resident/fellowship positions in 50 accredited programs. Recently, St. Luke's again took the lead to address the severe shortage of future physicians. In partnership with Temple University School of Medicine, St. Luke's launched the area's first Medical School in 2011.

Many Awards for Clinical Excellence

St. Luke's has some of the most experienced physicians and nurses in our industry who strive for innovations that will improve your care and help make your hospital stay more comfortable. Their efforts help earn St. Luke's recognition as a 100 Top Hospital and many other awards for our clinical excellence. St. Luke's consistently performs better than other hospitals in the Lehigh Valley in publicly reported performance reports. St. Luke's stands in no one's shadow when it comes to quality. In fact, others consistently stand in ours. As you peruse this web site, you'll see why St. Luke's is regarded as a world class premiere health system and a community pillar.

St. Luke's is also proud to be a partner with other organizations on initiatives to improve the quality of health care and life in the Greater Lehigh Valley. I am especially pleased with our employees' efforts in these many programs and the results that help restore the health and well-being of our more vulnerable and those less fortunate citizens. We have the organizational resources, talent, culture and will to continue to enter into “win-win” mutually respectful partnerships that control health care costs and ensure access to care now and in the future.

Focus on the Best in Quality

As the health care debate continues, and change asserts itself on this industry, we will continue our tradition of focusing on three core values – quality, safety and continuing to be the most cost-effective health network in the Lehigh Valley. We will also continue to remain one of the most cost effective care providers in the nation - meaning you, our patients, get more for less.

So browse our web site to see how we’ve been providing quality care to our community for 150 years.
