Managing your child’s asthma effectively
Many children benefit most from a multilayered approach, including preventive medications (oral or injected), daily inhalers for prevention, rescue inhalers for attacks, immunotherapy, and regularly scheduled visits with their allergist or immunologist to monitor changes. Every asthma sufferer has different needs, so your St. Luke’s provider will work with you until the ideal solution is found. Many patients have two or more asthma treatments for optimal control, including one preventive medication and one rescue medication.
Common food allergies in children
When allergenic food is ingested, antibodies attack the food proteins, resulting in symptoms such as hives, swelling, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, trouble breathing, and/or fainting. The most common food allergens include cow’s milk, soy, egg, wheat, peanut, tree nuts, finned fish, and shellfish. Many children do outgrow their food allergies; however some food allergies can be lifelong. Diagnosis involves a detailed history of the reaction, skin testing, and blood testing. Management involves avoidance of the problematic food and emergency treatment of accidental ingestion.
