Spiritual care is integral to the practice of holistic care which considers and meets all aspects of the patient and their families' physical, emotional, spiritual, and psychosocial needs. Within St. Luke’s University Health Network, spiritual care is a component of the interdisciplinary care team.

What is spiritual care?

Spiritual Care is a person-centered care, tailored to the unique spiritual, emotional, and existential needs of patients, families, and staff. It also cares for the whole person as they search for a sense of meaning that enhances their ability to adapt to crises and affect their coping with the goal of improving the person’s overall state of well-being.

Spiritual care statement of intent

St. Luke’s Spiritual Care Department is dedicated to the spiritual wellbeing of our patients, their loved ones, and all members of our interdisciplinary care-giving teams within the St. Luke’s University Health Network. As Chaplains, we see our hospitals and care centers as Sacred Spaces of Healing. We are committed to fostering a compassion-centered environment that is free from threat, judgement and discrimination of all people – regardless of religious belief, socio-economic status, nationality, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual and any other expressions of identity. We stand in solidarity with the vulnerable and marginalized in our midst, in accordance with our spiritual call to service, ethical obligations of our profession, and core values of our organization.

Department of spiritual care

Established in 1977, the Department of Spiritual Care is comprised of full-time ACPE, Inc. Certified Educators, Staff Chaplains, part-time Associate Chaplains, CPE Students, Certified Mindfulness Instructor, and Volunteers. We provide 24-hour spiritual care to a growing healthcare network that is comprised of twelve campuses throughout northeast Pennsylvania and western New Jersey. Our ACPE, Inc. accredited programs are innovative and collaborative.

Benefits of mindfulness

Mindfulness programs are offered throughout the year, providing participants with valuable, skill-based practices typically taught over an 8-week course. Clinical studies have shown that mindfulness can help reduce stress, improve symptoms of depression and anxiety, promote more balanced eating habits, and decrease pain sensitivity. Each course is designed to help you cultivate presence, clarity, and emotional positivity—serving as a powerful tool to support your overall health and well-being.
