The Trauma Center at St. Luke’s University Hospital is committed to educating healthcare providers in the fields of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care.

St. Luke’s Adult Level I Trauma Center and its faculty strive to educate a broad range of healthcare providers including pre-hospital providers, students, nurses, advanced practitioners, residents and physicians. It is vitally important to the safety of the community and to quality patient care that these groups work together to stay at the forefront of the fast-paced changes affecting the health care field. Therefore, the St. Luke’s Adult Level I Trauma Center provides professional continuing education programs to advance the quality of healthcare and exceed the demands of today's healthcare licensing/educational requirements. The Advanced Trauma Life Support® (ATLS®) program can teach you a systematic, concise approach to the care of a trauma patient. ATLS was developed by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma (COT) and was first introduced in the US and abroad in 1980.  Its courses provide you with a safe and reliable method for immediate management of injured patients.  The course teaches you how to assess a patient’s condition, resuscitate and stabilize him or her, and determine if his or her needs exceed a facility’s capacity. It also covers how to arrange for a patient’s inter-hospital transfer and assure that optimum care is provided throughout the process. If you don’t treat trauma patients frequently, an ATLS course provides an easy method to remember for evaluation and treatment of a trauma victim.

ATLS training participants are presented with information that enables them to:

  • Assess the patient’s condition rapidly and accurately. 
  • Resuscitate and stabilize the patient according to priority. 
  • Determine if the patient’s needs exceed a facility’s capacity. 
  • Arrange appropriately for the patient’s inter-hospital transfer (who, what, when and how). 
  • Ensure that optimum care is provided and that the level of care doesn’t deteriorate at any point during the evaluation, resuscitation or transfer process.

The American College of Surgeons is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Participants have the option of attending the two day ATLS Provider Course or meet the requirements for ALTS renewal by attending the second day of the provider course from 12pm till 5pm.

The American College of Surgeons designates this live activity for a maximum of 17.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Of the AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ listed above, a maximum of 17.00 credits meet the requirements for Self-Assessment.

Pre-Hospital professionals are welcome to audit the ATLS course. This provides an opportunity to merge their pre-hospital expertise with practicing physicians. This course is approved for 13.5 PA DOH EMS CEU's for auditing the course.

Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN) is an advanced course designed for the registered nurse interested in increasing his/her knowledge in management of the multiple trauma patient. The ATCN course is taught concurrently with ATLS.

During the ATLS skill and testing stations, the nurses are separated from the physician group and directed through ATCN skill stations.

ATCN Skill stations include:

  • Initial Assessment and Management
  • Airway and Ventilatory Management
  • Pediatric Trauma
  • Hemorrhagic Shock
  • Musculoskeletal & Spinal Care
  • Head Trauma

The Skill Stations are based on an interactive "hands-on: scenario-based approach" to adult education. The practical testing stations allow the ATCN students to demonstrate the application of ATLS and ATCN information on a moulaged patient. Participants receive both a ATCN manual and an ATLS manual.

The ATCN program verifies successful completion of the ATCN course and provides continuing education for completion of a course

Trauma nursing as a discipline refers to the process and content of all the different roles nurses have in the care of the trauma patient. Knowledge is the core of any discipline. The purpose of TNCC is to present core-level knowledge, refine skills, and build a firm foundation in trauma nursing. ENA (Emergency Nurses Association) developed and implemented the TNCC for national and international dissemination as a means of identifying a standardized body of trauma nursing knowledge. The TNCC (Provider) is a 16 hour course designed to provide the learner with cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills.

ENA developed The Trauma Nursing Core Course to establish a standardized body of trauma nursing knowledge and to improve the care of all trauma patients. This seventh edition course combines interactive learning with scenario-based assessments to give nurses a comprehensive learning experience. The course includes:

Intended Audience:

The TNCC may be officially attended by registered nurses (RN's). Other healthcare providers may attend the course as observers. In order to maximize success in the TNCC (Provider), it is recommended that the participant have at least six months of clinical nursing experience in an emergency care setting. It is assumed that the course participant possesses generic nursing knowledge, has an understanding of emergency care terminology, and has familiarity with standard emergency equipment.
