Meet the Physicians Behind the Fellowship

The named Senft-Westheim Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship honors Stephen C. Senft, MD and Alan I. Westheim, MD -- two of the Lehigh Valley's preeminent dermatologists who helped found the Department of Dermatology at St. Luke's, in 2019.

Dr. Senft graduated from medical school at Penn State Hershey and then trained in Internal Medicine at Penn State Hershey and Dermatology at Brown University.  Early on in his 35 years of clinical practice, he recognized the unique value of Mohs micrographic surgery and was one of the first people to perform the procedure in the Lehigh Valley community. Dr. Senft served as the inaugural Mohs micrographic surgeon within the St. Luke's Department of Dermatology.  He continues to teach and care for patients at the St. Luke's Dermatology office in Center Valley.

Dr. Westheim met Dr. Senft while training in Internal Medicine at Brown and took the sage advice to pursue a career in Dermatology.  After completing his Internal Medicine residency, Dr. Westheim became the third person to ever graduate from Penn State Hershey's dermatology training program. He subsequently established his dermatology practice in East Stroudsburg, PA, where he served as the sole dermatologist to the Poconos community before retiring after more than 35 years. Dr. Westheim founded the multidisciplinary Melanoma and Complex Cutaneous Oncology Tumor Board that is held every two weeks at the Anderson Cancer Center.

Ultimately, the fact that this fellowship exists at St. Luke's is a tribute to the enduring impact of these dermatologists' clinical leadership. They stand as quintessential role models for our future trainees, embodying the precision, integrity, and wisdom that define our specialty. Above all, their tireless commitment to their patients serves as the primary inspiration for this training program. By carrying their names forward, we ensure that Dr. Senft and Dr. Westheim's legacies of excellence and compassionate care remain the standard for every fellow who enters this department.

About the Program

Building on the St. Luke’s Dermatology Residency Program, established in 2021, St. Luke’s University Health Network has expanded its academic training with the launch of an ACGME-accredited Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship, further strengthening its multisite dermatologic education program.

The Senft-Westheim Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship is based at St. Luke’s University Hospital and is supported by five fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons—Dr. Nadia Abidi (Fellowship Director), Dr. Michelle Juarez, Dr. Shannon Zullo, Dr. Veronica Rutt and Dr. Christine Cabell. The program spans four clinical sites at St. Luke's Allentown Campus, St. Luke's Anderson Campus, Zaladonis Dermatology Practice, and DermDox Mohs Center, each with dedicated on-site Mohs laboratories and serving as regional referral centers for complex cutaneous oncology.

Starting in 2026, the program will accept one fellow annually. Fellows will receive comprehensive training in Mohs micrographic surgery, a wide range of reconstructive techniques, multi-site clinic practice, and training in managing complex cutaneous oncology, gained through both clinics and tumor board. The program also routinely integrates use of laser therapy in the post-Mohs setting and with scar revision techniques, in general (including surgical and dermabrasion).

Through this fellowship, St. Luke’s University Hospital continues to advance its academic mission by training future leaders in Mohs micrographic surgery while delivering specialized, patient-centered care across the region.
