Mental & Emotional Wellness

Your health is important, too.

New mother struggling with mental health

Supporting your mental and emotional wellness through pregnancy and beyond.

Becoming a parent is a profound journey—one filled with joy, love, and transformation. But it can also bring unexpected emotional challenges. At the Baby & Me Support Center, we’re here to remind you that we’re here for you.

If you’re experiencing any mental health symptoms that concern you, it’s important to talk with your provider for evaluation and support. This is especially true when distinguishing between the common “Baby Blues” and more serious conditions like Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs).

You are not alone: understanding PMADs

  • 1 in 5 mothers or birthing persons experience a Perinatal Mood or Anxiety Disorder (PMAD)
  • 1 in 10 partners or fathers are also affected
  • PMADs are the most common complication of childbirth
  • Up to 60–80% of new mothers experience the “Baby Blues”

Recognizing the signs

Baby Blues (common and temporary)

  • Mood swings, sadness, anxiety
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Trouble bonding with baby
  • Typically resolves within 2 weeks

PMADs (more persistent and serious)

  • Ongoing sadness, irritability, or hopelessness
  • Loss of interest or joy
  • Sleep and appetite changes
  • Difficulty with hygiene or concentration
  • Intrusive thoughts or fears, including thoughts of harm
