Importance of an ergonomic office chair, mouse and more

Whether you’re working in an office, attending classes, or doing remote work from home, your environment plays a major role in how your body feels. A poorly arranged workspace can lead to repetitive strain injuries, headaches, and tightness in the neck, shoulders and back.

“Your workspace shouldn’t force your body to adapt,” explains Kristen Staula, DC, of St. Luke’s Chiropractic Care. “Instead, set up your environment so your body can stay in a natural, comfortable position.”

With the right ergonomic adjustments, many people notice less pain, more energy, and improved productivity.

The essentials for a healthier work set-up

  • Keep your feet flat on the floor or on a footrest
  • Adjust your chair so hips and knees are level or slightly open
  • Position your keyboard so your wrists stay straight, not bent up or down
  • Use a headset or earbuds for long phone calls to avoid cradling the phone
  • Keep your monitor an arm’s length away and at eye level
  • Ensure your chair provides proper lumbar (lower‑back) support

Even small changes, such as raising your monitor or adjusting your chair height, can significantly reduce strain on your body throughout the day.

Staula adds, “It’s not about being perfectly still all day. Your body is designed to move, so building in small posture changes and movement breaks is just as important as your setup.”
