The importance of your spine

Your spine supports nearly every movement you make, from bending and lifting to walking and standing. Spine health is essential for comfort, flexibility, and long‑term mobility. While many people don’t think about spinal care until pain appears, preventive habits can go a long way in maintaining comfort and function.

People often wait until they’re in pain to think about back health,” says Adam Pembleton, DC, of St. Luke’s Chiropractic Care, “but a few preventive steps can go a long way.”

Creating a spine‑friendly lifestyle doesn’t require major changes, just consistent daily choices.

Daily habits to support your spine

  • Move often, especially after long periods of sitting
  • Eat an anti-inflammatory diet full of fruits/vegetables and limited processed foods
  • Lift with your legs, keeping the load close to your body
  • Avoid sudden increases in activity level without proper preparation and training
  • Sit with proper ergonomic posture and take frequent breaks
  • Include aerobic exercise for at least 150 min/week
  • Include strength training at least 2 days/week
  • Sleep on a supportive mattress for >7 hours per night

How to get started

Moving more and sitting less remains one of the best things you can do for your back.

Small, consistent changes in your daily routine can make a significant difference in preventing back pain and preserving spinal health over time,” adds Pembleton. “It’s about building habits that support your body before problems begin.”
