Specialities:
Clinical Genetics | Pediatrics | Clinical Genetics and Genomics (MD)I am delighted to be part of the specialty care providers at St. Luke’s University Health Network.
As a geneticist with a pediatric background, infants and children make up most the patients I evaluate. I have also provided care for families with adult-onset genetic disorders.
My main role, often in collaboration with other specialties, has been to determine the causes of congenital anomalies, failure to grow, process food and neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism. Congenital anomalies are structural or functional abnormalities present at birth that can lead to physical disability, intellectual and developmental disorders, and other health problems.
My extensive training in pediatrics and genetics has prepared me to evaluate the results of exome and genome testing to detect many genetic disorders. For example, whole exome sequencing can often discern an underlying genetic reason in samples submitted. I hope such information will lead to a better understanding of an individual condition, allow the patient or family access to others with the same condition and now, or perhaps in the future, enable personalized treatment.
I received my medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. I completed a pediatric residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and a genetics fellowship at the Institute for Molecular Genetics. I am board-certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics, Clinical Genetics.
I have practiced as a clinical geneticist for over 25 years at Southern Illinois University in Springfield, Illinois; then Carle Foundation Hospital at Champaign, IL, and most recently, as the Chief of Genetics at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia.
I am an avid student of history and visual arts. I have a family, a dog and a garden. I hope I make this world more just and beautiful, and keep my family happy, my dog fed and the caterpillars off my kale.
