I specialize in managing children’s birthmarks, treating inflammatory skin conditions and utilizing laser surgery to restore function and improve the appearance of scars. I encourage my patients to call me “Dr. K.,” and I strive to build strong, trusting relationships with my patients and families, where they feel free to fully discuss every aspect of their children’s skin condition management plans.
When I joined St. Luke’s University Health Network in 2018 as the founding Chair of Dermatology and Program Director of the Dermatology Residency, I brought more than 20 years of experience at the forefront of dermatology education and clinical practice. A trained pediatrician, I am board-certified in both pediatric and general dermatology. Before joining St. Luke’s, I was the Chief Medical Officer for a multi-state, private equity-backed dermatology network. Prior to moving to the East Coast, I was the inaugural Director of Innovation and assistant professor at Rady Children’s Hospital of San Diego and the University of California San Diego (UCSD), where I helped launch the nation’s first comprehensive eczema center and pediatric-focused scar treatment program. I was involved with numerous clinical trials and served as dermatology’s representative to UCSD’s Institutional Review Board. I proudly supported over 40 medical students, residents and fellows as an invited International UCSD Mentor.
I lecture regularly and serve as a course director for major organizations, including the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society for Pediatric Dermatology. I am the procedural section manager for Pediatric Dermatology and am a pediatric dermatology editor for Practical Dermatology and the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology. I have authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles, 16 textbook chapters and two textbooks, including “The Scar Book” and “Pediatric Procedural Dermatology.”
I earned my medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where I also obtained a Master of Arts in American Studies. I completed my pediatric residency at Johns Hopkins Medical Institute and my dermatology residency at UCSD, followed by a fellowship in pediatric dermatology and laser surgery. My research and advocacy efforts have earned recognition from external organizations, including a Gold Triangle Award from the American Academy of Dermatology in 2010 for my contributions to eczema education and the inaugural Dermatologist from the Heart Award from LaRoche-Posay in 2013. During COVID, I served as Interim Chair of Pathology and Laboratory. During that tenure, our amazing St. Luke’s Path Team won the Medical Laboratory Observer’s 2021 Lab of the Year Award. Most recently, I received the President’s Award from the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery for leading a multispecialty task force on appearance-altering procedures for legal minors.
Outside of the exam room, I am a medical cartoonist for Practical Dermatology and the host of “Don’t Be Rash: The Pediatric Dermatology Show” – the official podcast of the Society for Pediatric Dermatology. I enjoy cheering for the Philadelphia Flyers, playing the harmonica badly and creating adventures with my crazy family and sunbeam-enjoying Labrador retriever.
