St. Luke’s Hospice worker Robert Heywood of Tatamy won the “Spirit of Hospice and Palliative Care” award at the Pennsylvania Hospice and Palliative Care Network Annual (PHPCN) Conference.
This award, presented at the conference in Harrisburg last month, recognizes a hospice aide who demonstrates outstanding performance, sensitivity, respect and continuous excellence of service in hospice and palliative care.
Heywood’s manager, Mary O’Donnell-Miller, RN, BSN, Patient Care Manager, recounted an example of Heywood’s exemplary care:
Heywood spoke to a patient about a guitar leaning against the wall. The family had told Heywood how the patient had loved to play music for anyone who would listen. Heywood asked permission to play for the patient.
The tension in the patient’s face suddenly eased and his breathing steadied, recounted O’Donnell-Miller. The patient opened his eyes and looked at Heywood. He then verbalized his first words in over a day: “Thank you.”
The patient passed away later that day peacefully, in the company his family.
“There is gentleness to Heywood’s spirit that at once sets you at ease,” O’Donnell-Miller said. “He does the extra things that improve the quality of life and help patients to feel cared for. … His smile and positivity gives patients and families reassurance.”
St. Luke’s Hospice is dedicated to providing patients and their families with compassionate end-of-life care. The focus is on the care, not cure, and on quality and value of life, not the length.
