What is Dysport?

Dysport is an injectable form of botulinum toxin–a purified protein filler—that temporarily reduces wrinkles and lines in different areas of your face. This simple injection paralyzes the muscles that cause wrinkles and gives the skin a more youthful appearance.

While Dysport is primarily used to treat lines on your forehead and between your eyebrows, it can be used for select other areas as well. Dysport is also a great option for moderate to severe frown lines, whereas Botox is better for mild to moderate.

If you want to learn more about Dysport–or schedule a consultation with a plastic surgeon–then contact St. Luke’s Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery.

Overview

Dysport candidates include adults who want to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, especially glabellar lines between the eyebrows. This anti-aging treatment can be deeper than Botox, which makes it effective for treating more severe frown lines.

Although Dysport is typically used on the face, it can also be used on other areas of the body to reduce the appearance of lines. Once injected, it quickly relaxes the muscle, preventing it from contacting—which reduces wrinkles.

To determine if Dysport is right for you, schedule a consultation with St. Luke’s plastic surgeon.

From cosmetic to health-related, getting Dysport can have numerous benefits and positively impact an individual’s quality of life. The following list includes some of the most commonly reported benefits:

  • Boosted confidence
  • Rejuvenated skin appearance
  • Smoother skin consistency
  • Fewer wrinkles
  • Reduced sweating
  • Slimmer jawline
  • Fuller top lip

Dysport also treats muscle spasms and can improve other medical conditions—though it’s primarily used for cosmetic treatments. Having Dysport can dramatically improve your body image and give you a more youthful appearance.

As with all cosmetic procedures, Dysport has risks. Some of them include the following:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Itching
  • Headache
  • Muscle weakness

The surgeon will review a full list of risks before getting your consent.

Before the procedure

Before your Dysport treatment at St. Luke’s Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, your physician will answer questions you have and address your expectations. Additionally, they may review your overall health–including the following:

  • General health
  • Risk factors
  • Medical conditions
  • Drug allergies
  • Current medications
  • Herbal supplements
  • Drug or tobacco use
  • Past treatments with injectable fillers

On the day of your Dysport injections, your Dysport doctor may measure your face and take photos for your records.

During the procedure

Your doctor will work with you to determine the best type of treatment to achieve your desired results. Dysport for your face only takes a few minutes and doesn’t require anesthesia. Each Dysport treatment will temporarily reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Dysport for crow’s feet

Dysport for crow’s feet minimizes wrinkles on the sides of your eyes. These wrinkles—called lateral orbital rhytids—are caused by muscle contractions and other aging factors. Because it gently relaxes your muscles, Dysport is a preferred way to treat lines around your eyes. Dysport for crow’s feet is a non-surgical facelift alternative and may last up to four months.

Dysport for forehead and lines between your brows

Dysport for your forehead and the lines between your brows (“11s”) minimize lines in the glabella area between your eyebrows. These lines are caused by muscle contractions that occur when you frown or squint. Because it gently relaxes your muscles, Dysport is a preferred way to treat moderate to severe forehead wrinkles. Dysport for your forehead and lines between your brows is a non-surgical facelift alternative and may last up to four months.

Dysport for brows

Dysport for your eyebrows prevents your eyebrows from drooping. Because it gently relaxes the depressor muscles in your forehead—the muscles that pull your eyebrows and eyelids down—Dysport is a preferred way to lift your eyebrow arch. Dysport for your eyebrows is a non-surgical alternative to a brow lift and may last up to four months.

Dysport for lips (“lip flip”)

Dysport for your lips makes your upper lip look fuller and more defined. Because it relaxes your orbicularis oris muscle—the muscle that surrounds your mouth that controls lip movement—Dysport is a preferred way to add volume to your upper lip. Dysport for a “lip flip” effect is a non-surgical facelift alternative and may last up to four months

After the procedure

For fine lines and shallow wrinkles, you’ll notice improvements within a week of your injections. For harsher lines and deeper wrinkles, it may take longer. However, Dysport is more diluted than Botox—so it spreads faster and yields quicker results. Because Dysport is a temporary solution for cosmetic concerns, you’ll need ongoing treatments to maintain your results.

Dysport injections are minimally invasive, so there is no downtime or recovery period. While there may be bruising, redness, or swelling, symptoms should subside within 24 hours. You should avoid lying down for the first several hours after your treatment.
