St. Luke's Nursing and Medical Students Host First Bone Marrow Drive

Bethlehem, PA. (4/7/2015) — The Student-Nurses Association of St. Luke’s School of Nursing is happy to present its first Bone Marrow Donor Drive in conjunction with the medical students from The Medical School of Temple University/St. Luke’s University Health Network and the Delete Blood Cancer organization.

Delete Blood Cancer works to inspire people to register as bone marrow donors.

The bone marrow drive will take place in the Priscilla Payne Hurd (Entrance A) and Centennial Wing (Entrance B) lobbies at St. Luke’s University Hospital – Bethlehem, 801 Ostrum Street, Bethlehem, from 7 am – 7 pm on Wednesday, April 29, 2015. The day will include donor database registration as well as a basket drawing, bake sale, candy bar sale and more in support of April as “Donate Life” organ donation awareness month.

The 12-hour event aims to encourage hospital faculty, staff, patients and family to consider registering their names and tissue types into a national matching database. Of the 150,000 patients likely to be diagnosed with blood cancer this year, nearly 70 percent of them will need to use the national registry to find a bone marrow match.

In order to donate you must meet the following requirements:

• Between age 18 and 55 and in good health
• Weigh at least 110 pounds
• Have a BMI below 40
• Be willing to donate when/if a match is found for you
