Didactic Schedule

Group of Doctors talking

Didactic sessions are a core element of the residency training program. The general weekly schedule is as follows:

Monday afternoon resident led didactics include weekly core textbook and core dermatopathology chapter reviews, monthly genodermatoses lectures led by our pediatric dermatologist, procedural/cosmetics dermatology lectures by our Mohs and cosmetics attendings, and professionalism/career development sessions.

Tuesday, the residents receive an attending led JAAD CME review lecture, and Thursday the attending provides a pharmacology and Kodachrome session.

Wednesday is the dermatopathologist led “scope session” corresponding to the textbook chapter for the week.

Friday morning is dedicated to department wide didactics and meetings where grand rounds, transitions of care, basic science lectures, board review, and resident/faculty meetings are held.

Didactic sessions include the following educational opportunities:

  • Basic Science Lectures: Formal lectures on basic science will complement the clinical learning and will supplement the weekly textbook review at least once per 4-week didactic block during Friday departmental didactics. Regularly scheduled faculty and resident lectures will provide further clinical pearls and management considerations.
  • Dermatopathological Textbook Review and "Unknown” Slide Sessions: These sessions include a dedicated resident led review of an assigned textbook dermatopathology chapter weekly, followed by an attending led “scope session” in which examples of that week’s diagnoses are reviewed. Some admixed “unknowns” may be admixed, and several “review” sessions are held in this manner throughout the academic year.
  • Core Textbook Review: A formal, weekly text review of Andrews’ Diseases of the Skin and/or Bolognia’s Dermatology will ensure that both texts will be read in their entirety over a 1-year and 2-year period, respectively. Typically, the first-year residents work together to update the lectures annually prior to the Chief Resident led textbook review sessions.
  • JAAD CME Review: Once per week, the on-call attending prepares and presents a PowerPoint presentation of a JAAD CME article published within the last 5 years. Comprehension questions are admixed throughout the presentation. The PowerPoints are aggregated and serve as a board study source for our graduating residents.
  • Pharmacology and Kodachrome Sessions: Once per week, the on-call attending prepares and presents a PowerPoint presentation on an assigned pharmacology topic, as well as 10-20 kodachromes.
  • Grand Rounds: Once per didactic block, department wide grand rounds are presented which include interesting and challenging cases encountered.
  • Board Review: Once per didactic block, Chief Resident led board review is held, highlighting various topics via written questions and Kodachrome sessions.
  • Professionalism/Career Development Curriculum: Once per didactic block, a professionalism or career development lecture is provided. Prior topics have included stress management and burnout, running a private practice, quality improvement, and financial management, among others.
  • Transitions of Care: Once weekly, a formal review of all the weekly inpatient consults is led by the on call team and serves as a “handoff” to the incoming call team.
