Residency Rotation Schedule

Medical Physics

Clinical Rotations

1. Orientation:

Provide resident with detailed information of the program’s requirements, resident administrative procedures and department and SLUHN expectations, a clinical radiation oncology setting and workflow, clinical systems and equipment, and radiation safety.

Year 1, 1st month (Jul)

2. Treatment Planning I and Physicist of the Day (POD) I

Provide resident with an introduction to dosimetry and treatment planning, informatics used in radiation therapy clinics and comprehensive understanding of POD’s responsibility and day-to-day clinical operations.

Year 1, Quarter 1 (Aug, Sep)

3. Dosimetry Systems:

Provide fundamental knowledge and sufficient practical training experience for active competency in the dosimetry systems used in radiotherapy clinic.

Year 1, Quarter 2 (Oct, Nov, Dec)

4. Machine QA:

Provide resident with the fundamental knowledge and practical training for proficiency in routine calibrations for machines (CT-sim, Linac, etc.) in accordance with AAPM guidelines; patient specific QA and diode measurements.

Year 1, Quarter 3 (Jan, Feb, Mar)

5. Facility Design, Equipment Acceptance Testing and TPS Commissioning

Train resident with the fundamental knowledge for designing radiation treatment facility, equipment acceptance testing and TPS commissioning.

Year1, Quarter 4 (Apr, May, Jun)

6. HDR/LDR Brachytherapy

This rotation is structured to train resident with knowledge and experience of brachytherapy basics and brachytherapy applications.

Year 2, Quarter 1 (Jul, Aug, Sep)

7. Special Procedures and Imaging

Train resident with the fundamental knowledge and clinical basis of total body irradiation (TBI), total skin electron irradiation (TSEI), and proton. Also train resident on CT, MR, PET and US.

Year 2, Quarter 2 (Oct, Nov, Dec)

8. SRS-SBRT

Provide resident with the fundamental knowledge and experience on intracranial and extracranial SRS-SBRT radiation therapy. The resident will also learn the principle and clinical workflow of online adaptive therapy with Varian Ethos.

Year 2, Quarter 3 (Jan, Feb)

9. Treatment Planning II and Physicist of the Day (POD) II

Train resident with fundamental knowledge and sufficient practical experience for active competency in LINAC-based IMRT/VMAT treatment planning, quality assurance (QA), informatics involved and POD’s work.

Year 2, Quarter 4 (Mar, April, May)

10. Professionalism And Ethics

Provide resident with basic knowledge of Professionalism and Ethics.
