Dr. Birriel is an active member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and is on the ASMBS Clinical Issues Committee. He participates in surgical research for bariatric and minimally invasive surgery and has presented and published these topics at national meetings. He is also involved in teaching surgical residents and medical students from the Temple/St. Luke’s Campus.
Experience
Dr. Birriel is a bariatric and metabolic surgeon who has a strong passion for treating and preventing the multitude of diseases related to obesity. His specialty in the surgical treatment of obesity allows him to provide his patients with a renewed and healthier life. He believes in individualized, quality care for each patient and develops a treatment plan based on their medical and surgical needs.
Dr. Birriel is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and specializes in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery including the Roux-en-y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and revisional bariatric surgery. He also specializes in advanced laparoscopic foregut surgery for the treatment of hiatal or paraesophageal hernias, achalasia, as well as for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) amongst others.
Dr. Birriel has spoken frequently in the media regarding the health benefits of weight loss surgery.
Education
Dr. Birriel earned his medical degree from Ponce School of Medicine in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He completed his general surgery training at St. Luke’s University Health Network in Bethlehem, PA and an Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.
