Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy allows your doctor to look at the inner lining of your large intestine (rectum and colon) to help find ulcers, tumors and areas of inflammation or bleeding. Also, and most importantly, colonoscopy enables physicians to identify and remove small growths called polyps that if not removed can lead to colon cancer – the second most deadly and third most common – type of the disease. Although colorectal cancer can have symptoms, such as blood in the stools, change in bowel habits, belly pain, weight loss and fatigue, often there are no symptoms at all.

Regular screening for these polyps decreases your risk of cancer and increases the effectiveness of treatment should it be found. The American College of Gastroenterology recommends colonoscopy as the preferred test because and polyps found can be removed immediately.
