Physiatry is offered as an outpatient service through St. Luke’s. St. Luke’s physiatrists work to maximize functional independence for patients who have experienced acute trauma or chronic conditions such as:

Physiatry – Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

Physiatry or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is a specialty with expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal, neurologic, traumatic, acute and chronic conditions. St. Luke’s physiatrists use a holistic approach and work as part of a team to tailor specific treatments to each patient with the ultimate goal of improving overall quality of life. Programs are tailored to address each individual patient’s needs.

A physiatrist can determine a plan of care and offer the following:

  • Determine if a patient requires outpatient, inpatient, skilled nursing facility, or home level rehabilitation services
  • Collaborate with other physicians, physical therapists (PTs), occupational therapists (OTs), speech and language pathologists (SLPs), social workers, case managers
  • Write individualized therapy prescriptions
  • Determine shoe wear, bracing, prosthetics, orthotics, equipment needs (i.e. back braces, canes, walker, wheelchair)
  • Personalize exercise plans
  • Utilize medications, injections, assistive technology when appropriate
  • Provide a thorough musculoskeletal and gait analysis
  • Educate patients and families
  • Assist in conservative pain management plans
  • Provide functional assessments and prognosis
