Dr. Maryann P. Hartzell, a podiatrist affiliated with St. Luke’s University Health Network, has been named Podiatrist of the Year by her peers.
The Pennsylvania Podiatric Medical Association (PPMA) bestows the annual award on a member who demonstrates the highest of professional and personal values in treating patients with foot and ankle disorders.
“This award symbolizes the best of the best,” the 875-member PPMA said in announcing Dr. Hartzell as this year’s winner in November.
“I’m honored, completely honored to be recognized by my peers,” Dr. Hartzell said.
Through her affiliation with St. Luke’s, Dr. Hartzell is part of the medical team at the Wound Management Centers at the Bethlehem and Allentown campuses, where she and her fellow podiatrists treat all chronic non-healing wounds that are below the knee, including surgical, diabetic, venous and arterial wounds.
“Patients come in with a wound that has affected them psychologically, socially and physically. It keeps them from living their lives. To be able to impact somebody’s life by giving them back their lifestyle is very rewarding,” Dr. Hartzell said.
Dr. Hartzell is a partner at Advanced Podiatry Associates, Northampton, Pa., where she treats children and adults for a variety of conditions, including congenital disorders, bunions, fractures and podiatric complications of diabetes.
Dr. Hartzell, who grew up in Allentown, said she first became aware of podiatry when she just finished high school and her mother underwent bunion surgery. She said she researched the profession and found she liked the idea that podiatrists treat patients of all ages and also perform surgery.
“Patients come in and their feet hurt. You make them feel better and they leave happy. It’s very gratifying,” she said.
As part of her philosophy of care, Dr. Hartzell said she takes time to listen. “I feel very strongly about treating every patient as though they are your family. Doing that, you really can’t go wrong.”
Dr. Hartzell earned a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from what is now Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in 1991. She completed her residency at what is now Aria Health-Frankford in Philadelphia, where she did extensive training in complex foot and ankle reconstruction.
Dr. Hartzell is double board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and American Board of Wound Management. She is a Diplomate with the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery; Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons; and Diplomate with the American Academy of Wound Management
She is a past president of the PPMA and the Lehigh Valley Podiatric Medical Association and a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association. In 2016, she was named a Gallery of Success award winner for Temple University’s School of Podiatry.
Dr. Hartzell and her husband Gregory Sado have a grown daughter, Alexis Sado.
