Juan Carlos Martinez, MD, a former General Surgery Chief Resident, has returned to St. Luke’s University Health Network to join St. Luke’s Plastic Surgery after completing fellowships in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, as well as Microsurgery.

"During Dr. Martinez’ general surgery residency here at St. Luke's, I had the pleasure of working with him. He demonstrated an interest in plastic surgery early on,” says W. Michael Morrissey Jr., DMD, MD, St. Luke's Chief of Plastic Surgery. "I was impressed by his surgical skill, and attention to detail. After completing his general surgery training here at St. Luke's, he pursued further training in plastic surgery, and completed not only a plastic surgery residency, but also a one-year Fellowship in Microsurgery, both at Ohio State University. We are very pleased that he has joined our plastic surgery group at St. Luke's. He will be an excellent addition to our team."

Dr. Martinez was named the St. Luke’s Department of Surgery’s Resident of the Year in 2012. After graduating, Dr. Martinez completed a three-year fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, and subsequently, a one-year fellowship in Microsurgery at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, also in Columbus. His specialty and clinical interests include:

• Microsurgery, Complex Oncologic and Trauma Reconstruction
• Breast Reconstruction (DIEP, TRAM, SIEA), Augmentation, Reduction and Lifts
• Facial Aesthetic Surgery
• Body Contouring after Weight Loss or Bariatric Surgery
• Treatment of Migraine Headaches with Botox and Surgery
• Abdominal Wall Reconstruction

Prior to St. Luke’s, Dr. Martinez completed an internship in general surgery at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He earned his medical degree from Universidad Iberoamericana School of Medicine in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where he graduated first in his class. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery.

Before medical school, Dr. Martinez gained emergency room experience as a physician assistant at Central Hospital of the Armed Forces, and orthopedic surgery experience at General Hospital Health Plaza. Both hospitals are in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Dr. Martinez co-authored a book chapter, “Body contouring in the massive weight loss patient” in Essentials of Aesthetic Surgery, pending publication. His research interests include post-mastectomy radiation effects and innovations in breast reconstruction. He has also served on quality and patient safety committees.

Dr. Martinez and his wife Melissa reside in Center Valley with their two-year-old daughter Valentina. The couple is expecting a son in October.
