Sterile processing may not be an area of healthcare commonly talked about, but it is an essential to any hospital. Sterile processing refers to the process that is used to clean, sterilize, prepare, process, store all medical and surgical supplies and equipment for patient care.

St. Luke’s School of Sterile Processing is a six-month paid training program offering immediate access to employee benefits. Individuals hired into the program spend 40 hours a week in a dual education program. Each week, eight hours are spent in a classroom setting and 32 hours are dedicated to hands-on learning.

Students who have successfully completed the program will be prepared and can sit for an International certification exam in order to become a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST). The exam can be taken through either Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or a national certification through the Certified Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD). Certification is required by Pennsylvania law within 18 months of hire. Upon attaining Certification the employee will be eligible for an immediate pay increase.

Individuals with a high school diploma or GED equivalent are eligible to apply. Tuition to the program is waived with an 18-month employee commitment contract.
