The core of the learning experience in the residency program is to combine supervised “hands-on” patient care experience with structured didactic educational sessions and department meetings.

Academic Day Lectures
All Family Medicine residents attend a three hour academic day at the residency office every Tuesday morning. During this protected time, lectures and hands-on workshops are presented by Family Medicine faculty, our subspecialty colleagues, and the residents themselves. Topics from the entire breadth of Family Medicine are discussed over a 12 month curriculum.

Board Review
We understand that preparing to take your board examinations can be very stressful, and we have put several programs in place to help you. All residents have access to the AAFP’s renowned Board Review Express course. The faculty lead board review sessions during didactic academic days. Third year residents are provided with up to 5 days and $2000 to participate in a board review course. Finally, all of our faculty have recertified in the past three years, so we know how to prepare you!

Combined Resident ACGME/AOA Lecture Series
Residents from all St. Luke’s Hospital training programs attend these monthly conferences in which medicolegal, social, educational and profession-specific issues are reviewed. These occur the second Thursday of the month.

Other Conferences
Family Medicine residents participate in quarterly morbidity and mortality discussions, American Family Physician journal clubs, and practice management seminars. Resident well-being is supported through regularly scheduled Balint groups facilitated by our on-site behavioralist. Residents are also able to take advantage of the robust education department at St. Luke’s Hospital and attend on- site Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics. Yearly workshops give residents hands-on experience with minor surgical procedures, colposcopy, spirometry, and joint injection techniques.
