You might not know that St. Luke's was originally founded in 1872 to care for the workers at the Steel Foundries in Bethlehem. Today, a century and a half later, St. Luke's has grown into one of the state's largest health care networks. We provide service at more than 350+ locations that span 60 miles north to south and serve more than one million people living in eleven counties. Our 2,200+ physicians, 20,000+ employees and more than 2,100 volunteers provide overnight care for tens of thousands of patients a year and hundreds of thousands of outpatients. As a health network and major teaching facility, we also have the resources required to train the next generation of health care providers. Nursing students train in the nation’s longest continuously operating School of Nursing, established in 1884, as well as in programs conducted collaboratively with area colleges. For physicians seeking additional training, we offer more than 470 intern/resident/fellowship positions in 50 accredited programs. Recently, St. Luke's again took the lead to address the severe shortage of future physicians. In partnership with Temple University School of Medicine, St. Luke's launched the area's first Medical School in 2011.
