St. Luke’s Sports Medicine Sponsors Local Nike Coach Of The Year Clinic

St. Luke’s is the Largest Provider of Sports Medicine Services in the Greater Lehigh Valley Region

Lehigh Valley, PA (2/13/2015) -- St. Luke’s Sports Medicine, a service of St. Luke’s University Health Network, is the local sponsor for this year’s national Nike Coach of the Year Clinic. Scheduled for March 5 – 7 at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Breinigsville, this football clinic brings nationally recognized college coaches to the area to speak to and interact with local high school and college coaches. Nike expects approximately 300 local coaches to attend.

This year’s speakers include Mark Helfrich, head coach of the Oregon University Ducks; Mark Stoops, head coach of the University of Kentucky Wildcats; Kyle Flood, head coach of the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights; Bronco Mendenhall, head coach of the Brigham Young University Cougars; and Tim Murphy, head coach of the Harvard University Crimson. Some presentations of note will include topics such as injury and injury prevention.

Also speaking at the clinic will be three of St. Luke’s orthopaedic surgeons: Nicholas Avallone, MD; Brett Gibson, MD; and Daniel Heckman, MD. All sports medicine specialists, the surgeons will present information on:

   1. ACL Injuries in Football: Prevention and Treatment
   2. Trends in Hip Injury Treatment
   3. Shoulder Injuries in Football: An Update

St. Luke's has assembled a team of highly qualified licensed athletic trainers that work with athletic programs, teams, schools and athletes to set a new standard for comprehensive training and sports medicine services.    •  Access to St. Luke's Saturday Morning Fall Athletic Injury Clinics
   •  Education and instruction for students/coaches and parent organizations
   •  Sport-specific instruction and development of pre-season, in-season and off-season conditioning for athletes
   •  CPR/AED training for coaches

In addition, through unique partnerships with educational partners like Moravian College, Temple University and East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU), St. Luke’s Sports Medicine is well-positioned to provide both essential and value-added services. Through a long-standing strategic partnership with ESU, our Network is uniquely positioned to provide additional support for secondary school athletic programs by assigning licensed graduate assistants. Our newest relationship with Moravian College provides additional athletic training support and internship opportunities for students enrolled in graduate health care programs including Athletic Training.

St. Luke's Sports Medicine’ team physicians are dedicated to keeping athletes healthy, fit and at the top of their game by focusing on prevention, training and facilitating a rapid, successful recovery in the case of injury. We provide team physician services at practices, training sites, games and competitions, as well as clinical care and surgical treatment.
Services include:

   •  Working the sidelines of all home games
   •  Providing physical exams for many high school athletes
   •  Communicating directly with certified athletic trainers at each school
   •  Consulting with athletic trainers to get their athletes appointments quickly

   •  Providing continuing educational programs for athletic trainers

In addition to Easton Area, Wilson Area, Notre Dame, Marian Catholic, Whitehall, Northampton, Quakertown, Jim Thorpe, Mahanoy Area in Pennsylvania and Belvidere High School, Warren Hills Regional High School, Delaware Valley Regional High School, Phillipsburg School District and Centenary College in New Jersey, St. Luke’s Sports Medicine has recently signed contracts to provide both Moravian College and Bethlehem Area School District (BASD) with sports medicine services. St. Luke’s Sports Medicine is also the official medical provider for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association’s (PIAA) District XI.

St. Luke’s will partner with Moravian College to develop a center for sports medicine that will integrate an academic learning environment with the real-world application of programs and services. The center will be located at 1441 Schoenersville Road in Bethlehem, formerly the 24/7 Fitness Club.
