Bethlehem, PA (5/9/2014) -- Legendary jazz guitarist  Pat Martino will share the inspirational story behind his amazing recovery from a brain aneurysm during a presentation at St. Luke’s University Health Network May 15 at 1 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the Laros Auditorium, located in the hospital’s Doctors’ Pavilion, 701 Ostrum St., Bethlehem, PA 18015.

An NEA Jazz Master, Martino has been performing since the early ’60s, earning numerous honors for his work including four GRAMMY nominations. In 2004, he was named Guitar Player of the Year in Downbeat Magazine's Reader's Poll, and he has also been recognized with a “Songs from the Heart” Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences.

In the early ’80s, Martino suffered a severe, near-fatal brain aneurysm that left him with amnesia and no memory of his guitar or his career.  During his presentation, he’ll recount his inspirational journey following successful surgery, sharing the story of how music and the support of friends and computers helped him down the road to recovery so he could once again learn to play the instrument he loved. A brief question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

The Pat Martino presentation is made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Reserved parking for the event is avaible next to the Doctors’ Pavilion. Martino will also perform at 7:30 p.m. that evening at the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks, 101 Founders Way, Bethlehem, as part of RiverJazz presented by Concannon Miller. Tickets for the concert are on sale now at www.artsquest.org.
