Recognition for Advanced Clinical Knowledge and Skills

The American Physical Therapy Association established specialist certification as a mechanism to formally recognize physical therapists who have demonstrated advanced clinical knowledge and skills. To obtain board certification, candidates must submit evidence of required clinical practice in a specialty area. In addition, candidates must successfully complete a rigorous written examination, demonstrating specialized knowledge and advanced clinical proficiency in a specialty area of physical therapist practice. Board certified clinical specialists have shown greater efficiency and effectiveness in the treatment of individuals within their scope of practice.

The OCS (Orthopedic Clinical Specialist) is a certification that designates that the clinician holding this credentialing is a board recognized specialist in providing physical therapy for patients with orthopedic (musculoskeletal) injuries. The SCS (Sports Clinical Specialist) promotes the highest possible level of care for individuals with athletic injuries. Pedorthics is the design, manufacture, modification and fit of footwear, shoes and foot orthoses to alleviate problems caused by disease, overuse, congenital condition or injury. A certified pedortist is specifically educated and trained to manage comprehensive pedorthic patient care. Pedorthic certification is obtained from the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics, Inc.
