Bethlehem, PA (6/9/2011) - Medical oncologist and melanoma expert Sanjiv S. Agarwala, MD, Chief of Medical Oncology and Hematology for St. Luke's Hospital & Health Network and a member of the St. Luke's Cancer Center, will serve as program director for the Eighth International Symposium on Melanoma and Other Cutaneous Malignancies on June 25 and 26, 2011 in New York City.

Dr. Agarwala is chairing the symposium for the eighth consecutive year since its inception in 2004.

Premier Melanoma Meeting for Clinicians and Researchers

“This international melanoma symposium is the premier meeting for clinicians and researchers interested in melanoma worldwide and serves as a forum for presentations on cutting-edge research and discussion of tough clinical problems related to melanoma and other skin cancers,” said Dr. Agarwala. “Interactive case-based sessions with presenting faculty will offer expert insights into the disease process, leading clinical practices and promising new therapies. To me, it is an honor and a privilege to chair this meeting.”

The symposium will feature a faculty of 25 internationally renowned speakers from the United States, Germany, Scandinavia and Russia; it will draw about 200 registrants.

The symposium offers a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art care, according to Dr. Agarwala. This year's topics include current perspectives on the prevention of melanoma; recent developments in the diagnosis of melanoma, including noninvasive technologies; new developments in sentinel node assessment in melanoma; targeted therapies in the adjuvant setting for melanoma; integrating loco-regional therapies into treatment strategies for melanoma; differences between distinct immunotherapies for advanced melanoma; the next wave of targeted therapies in metastatic melanoma; tumor-board case discussions demonstrating the integration of new immunotherapies and targeted therapies into the care of patients with metastatic melanoma; managing treatment-related toxicities in patients with melanoma and other cutaneous malignancies; and recent insights into the etiology of other cutaneous malignancies and their clinical implications

The program is directed primarily toward medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists and dermatologists. Fellows, nurses, physicians assistants, pharmacists, researchers and other health care professionals who are interested in the treatment of melanoma and other cutaneous malignancies are also invited to attend.
