Quakertown Hospital Implements Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (S.A.N.E.) Program

St. Luke's Quakertown Hospital is the First Hospital in Upper Bucks Region to Offer Service Round the Clock

St. Luke's Quakertown Hospital, in addition to all St. Luke's Network Hospitals, recently introduced a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (S.A.N.E.) program.

Led by network S.A.N.E. coordinator Jane  Murray, who has been a S.A.N.E. nurse sine 1995, the program consists of eleven nurses who are on call 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week. "The nurses’ backgrounds are in emergency medicine, intensive care and obstetrics. When an alleged rape victim comes into the hospital, the nurses are called upon for a head-to-toe forensic inspection," comments Murray.

Once all materials are turned over for criminal investigation and laboratory studies, a clinical coordinator works with the victim to ensure emotional stability, health and well-being. The coordinator also works with the Sexual Assault Response Team, a Lehigh Valley volunteer service for crime victims. Together, they provide counseling, transportation and support if the victim is called upon to testify in court.

According to Ann Trump, Emergency Department nurse manager for St. Luke's Quakertown Hospital, "Having this service helps victims feel supported. It not only helps catch perpetrators, it makes our patients know that they don't have to go through this alone. It's difficult enough dealing with the nightmare of rape; we're happy that we can coordinate the criminal investigation and be an advocate for our patients."

The St. Luke's Ladies Auxiliary donated $25,000 seed money to start this project at St. Luke's Allentown and Bethlehem campuses in 2006 and another $10,000 for the purchase of a new colopscope, a sexual assault forensic camera, for St. Luke's Quakertown Hospital.

If you or anyone you know has been raped, please seek medical treatment immediately.
