Allentown Campus Recieves Premier Award for Quality for Second Consecutive Year

National Data-based Awards an Indicator of Quality Care, Reduced Costs

St. Luke's Hospital – Allentown Campus has been awarded the Premier Award for Quality in knee and hip replacement surgery for the second consecutive year. Representatives of Premier Inc., an alliance of not-for-profit hospitals and health care systems, presents the Award for Quality to John P. Bruno, DO, vice president for medical affairs, St. Luke's Hospital – Allentown Campus, at the Premier Breakthroughs Conference and Exhibition in Orlando, Florida June 19, 2007.

In hip and knee replacement procedures, St. Luke's Hospital - Allentown Campus ranks 6th out of 321 eligible hospitals or within the top 2 percent nationally. Additionally, St. Luke's Hospital-Allentown Campus earned the first place ranking in the knee and hip surgery category among the College of Teaching Hospitals, out of 48 eligible College of Teaching Hospitals.

Orthopedic surgeons operating at the Allentown Campus specialize in the replacement of all major joints, and have performed some of the most advanced orthopedic procedures anywhere. In 2006, St. Luke's Hospital – Allentown Campus became the first hospital in the region to offer the Ci System® for computer-assisted knee replacement surgery. This minimally-invasive technology for total knee replacement provides surgeons with a three-dimensional view of the knee joint and precise data to more accurately align implants during knee replacement procedures.

According to Premier, Inc., the award is distinguished by its consideration of performance-based criteria, including clinical quality outcomes, clinical process indicators and resource utilization outcomes. The Premier Award for Quality is earned in six clinical areas from a pool of nearly 400 eligible hospitals and is based on quality and cost data regularly submitted to Premier for reporting and benchmarking purposes.

Clinical areas considered for the 2007 Premier Award for Quality include hip and/or knee replacement procedures, coronary artery bypass graft, heart failure, pneumonia, acute myocardial infarction and maternal and neonatal care (pregnancy). Hospitals that submitted data to Premier's Perspective™ clinical comparative database, the largest clinical comparative database in the nation, between October 2005 and September 2006, were eligible to receive the 2007 Premier Award for Quality.
