Pleurx catheters are temporary tunneled catheters that are used for the management of recurrent pleural effusions. These catheters can be used as initial therapy for pleural effusions or after other failed procedures.
The Pleurx catheter can be left in place from a few weeks to several months. The placement of the catheter can be performed as an outpatient. Once the catheter is no longer required, it can simply be removed during an office visit with the thoracic surgeon.
Consultation with a thoracic surgeon at St. Luke's is required to determine if you are a potential candidate for this unique drainage device.
