Type I and Type II Diabetes

Diabetes is a very common condition suffered by both children and adults. It happens when the body does not make insulin (Type I diabetes) or does not properly use insulin (Type II diabetes). Insulin is a hormone that is needed to turn sugar, starches and other foods into energy needed for daily life. Read more about diabetes types.

Adrenal Dysfunction

The adrenal glands are located on the top of each kidney. They secrete adrenaline, aldosterone and cortisol which maintain blood pressure and salt levels in the blood, help control kidney function and control overall fluid concentrations in the body.

When you have hypothyroidism, your thyroid gland does not produce enough hormone. The most common cause of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto's thyroiditis. In this condition, the body's immune system mistakes the thyroid gland for something it needs to attack. Hypothyroidism may also occur if there is not enough iodine available for the thyroid to make hormone, if there are problems with the pituitary gland, or if the thyroid gland is removed. Hypothyroidism is treated with medications that replace the hormones your thyroid does not make.

With hyperthyroidism, the thyroid gland produces too much hormone. The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is Grave's Disease, a problem where the body's immune system overstimulates the thyroid. Methods used for treating hyperthyroidism can include medications, radiation, and surgery. Each method has advantages and disadvantages and is selected based on the patient's specific conditions.
