What is it?

Elbow arthritis is a painful condition in which the cartilage in the elbow joint wears down causing the bones to rub together.

This type of arthritis may appear after an injury to the elbow. Other risk factors include:

  • Infection
  • Gout

Symptoms include:

  • Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Swelling

A doctor will diagnose this type of arthritis by examining the elbow, reviewing symptoms and medical history and conducting imaging tests, such as X-rays.

Treatment

Treatment includes:

  • Applying heat or cold
  • Taking anti-inflammatory medication
  • Resting
  • Undergoing physical therapy
  • Undergoing surgery
