Charity Ball Centennial
Auxiliary of St. Luke's University Health Network Celebrates 100th Charity Ball
Bethlehem, PA (04/25/2012) - Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Future is the theme of the centennial St. Luke's Charity Ball being held at Saucon Valley Country Club on May 4th, 2012. Funds raised from the 100th Charity Ball will benefit The Bethlehem Partnership for a Healthy Community which has implemented a wide range of sustainable programs and services that address some of our region's most pressing healthcare needs.
“Our Auxiliary felt strongly that we wanted to give back to the community as a thank you for the support we have received the past 100 years,” stated Virginia Oskin, Auxiliary President.
Long and Rich History - Nearly 140 Years
The Auxiliary of St. Luke's University Hospital enjoys a long and rich history dating back to its founding in 1873, earning the distinction as one of the oldest continuously operating volunteer fundraising groups in the greater Lehigh Valley. Today's Auxiliary has over 200 members, with nearly half volunteering their time and talents to the planning and execution of the Charity Ball. The monies raised from almost a century of Charity Balls have enriched the lives of St. Luke's patients, students, staff and community.
“The St. Luke's Charity Ball embodies cherished and purposeful tradition, wrapped in elegance and ambiance, to attain a laudable goal – helping ensure the continuing success of St. Luke's University Hospital,” says Richard A. Anderson, President & CEO, St. Luke's University Health Network.
The first annual St. Luke's Charity Ball was held on February 3, 1912 at South Bethlehem's Coliseum, chaired by Mrs. Ruth Mae Sayre Linderman, with tickets costing $2.50 each. Starting in 1925 Hotel Bethlehem was home to the Charity Ball until it was moved to Saucon Valley Country Club in 1987 where it has happily remained. While themes and locations have changed over the past 100 years, the Charity Ball's commitment to caring has not wavered. The Auxiliary of St. Luke's University Hospital remains one of the largest supporters of the hospital, and the annual Charity Ball continues to be the Auxiliary's largest fundraiser. This year's centennial Charity Ball Chair is Maggie Prorok Stoneback.
