St. Luke's University Health Network is committed to providing the highest quality, patient-centered care to our patients. To meet the needs of our patients, St. Luke's offers access to hospitalists, physicians who specialize in treating patients in the hospital, while allowing primary care physicians more time to see patients in their offices.

Upon admission to the hospital, St. Luke's Internal Medicine Hospitalist Service will partner with your primary care physician to care for you. Our hospitalists provide 24-hours-a-day/7-days-per-week treatment and are readily available to discuss your care with you and your family.

We are honored to be entrusted by your primary care physician to provide you with your health care.

Questions & Answers

What is a hospitalist?
A hospitalist is a physician who specializes in caring for you while you are in the hospital, acting as your primary care physician whether your admission is planned or an emergency. Your hospitalist practices exclusively in the hospital setting and he/she has the added knowledge of hospital departments and specialties and is very accessible to nursing staff. A hospitalist works in collaboration with your outpatient primary care physician and specialists.

How does the hospitalist service work?
Our hospitalist group works together as a team. Therefore, you may see more than one hospitalist during your stay. You will be seen every day by a hospitalist who will be directing your care. A hospitalist is always available to meet your care needs and answer questions that you or your loved ones may have.

What if I need another specialist while I'm in the hospital?
The hospitalist may consult with other physicians to participate in your care as needed. If you are currently under the care of a specialist, your hospitalist will work with your specialist, as appropriate, while you are in the hospital.

How can the hospitalist be contacted?
If you or your loved ones would like to speak with one of our physicians or advanced practitioners about your care, please call our office at 484-526-6643 (Monday – Friday between 7:30 am – 4:30 pm) or ask your nurse to page the on-call hospitalist.

Will my primary care physician be kept up to date about my progress during my stay?
Yes. When you are admitted your Primary Care Physician is sent an automatic notification that you have been hospitalized. When you are discharged from the hospital, your hospitalist will provide a personalized document to your primary care physician with the important medical information gathered during your hospital stay so your physician may continue with your care plan. It is important that you follow up with your primary care physician, as directed, at the time of your discharge.
