Childbirth and Parenting Classes

St. Luke's University Health Network is pleased to offer a wide variety of childbirth and parenting classes at our Allentown and Bethlehem campuses.  Most classes can be taken at either campus, unless specifically noted.  Many of our courses are free, but some charge nominal fees*.  Please be sure to check with your insurance company, as some insurance companies will reimburse for part of or all of the class-associated fees.


Early Pregnancy . . . Off to a Good Start and What You Need to Know

Offered at Allentown and Bethlehem Campuses

Ideally, course participation should occur at the time of preconception through 20 weeks gestation.

women and their families. This informal class will provide information and an overview of our available services, prenatal classes, and our Prepared Childbirth Education. We will cover important information including feeding decisions, preparing for your birth experience, signs of preterm labor and more. A virtual tour of the New Beginnings Family Birth Center and Nursery is included. Partners, other family members and children are welcome.

Ready, Set, Deliver: Preparation for Your Special Day at St. Luke's Hospital

Offered at Allentown and Bethlehem Campuses

Ideally, course participation should occur at the time of 20 weeks gestation through your estimated due date.

This class will provide information for expectant mothers and their families to prepare for your delivery experience at St. Luke's.  Including tips on what to bring to the hospital, tips to help you have a positive birth experience and an in-depth, on-unit tour of our New Beginnings Family Birth Center and Nursery.

Prebirth or Checking-in Visit

When you have reached the 32nd week of your pregnancy, please call St. Luke's InfoLink at 1-866-STLUKES (785-8537) or 484-526-7900 to schedule a one-on-one visit with a nurse for about 45 minutes. The nurse will answer your questions and fill out all paperwork in advance of delivering your baby.  This visit does NOT include a tour of the unit.  Visits should be scheduled at the campus where you are planning your delivery.  A variety of dates and times for appointments are available.

Allentown Appointments are completed on South Wing, 3rd Floor, New Beginnings Family Birth Center Conference Room.

Bethlehem Appointments are completed in the PPH, 3rd floor, prebirth visit office, directly outside the New Beginnings Family Birth Center by the elevators.


Prepared Childbirth Education

Offered at Allentown and Bethlehem Campuses

Every woman has an idea of what her ideal birth experience will be like. St. Luke’s encourages every woman to work with her partner and physician to create an individualized birth plan that works for her situation.  In order to make the best, educated decisions regarding the birth of your baby, St. Luke’s offers Prepared Childbirth Education Class to supply practical information about labor and delivery. The small group-centered class will include 8 to 10 couples in a comfortable classroom environment where open discussions are encouraged.

This comprehensive course, taught by a Certified Childbirth Educator, makes learning about pregnancy, labor, birth and the postpartum experience interesting, informative and fun! Using hands on learning, 3-D animation, videos, Power Point, and other visual aids, your instructor will review physical changes in pregnancy, warning signs of preterm labor, and labor progression and positioning.  We will discuss comfort measures and natural techniques for coping with pain, as well as pain medication options, including the epidural.  Support persons will learn their role and how valuable their presence is during the labor phases and stages.  Your instructor will explain induction, augmentation and decision-making in labor, while also reviewing fast labors, slow labors and cesarean sections.  This class will also delve into the post-delivery routine for mom and newborn, as well as postpartum changes and emotions.  Classes usually take place during the last trimester of pregnancy. The course is offered as a four-week series with approximately two-hour classes each week for four consecutive weeks OR an intensive, one-day class.

This class is ideally attended during your third trimester of pregnancy. Classes are offered as a four-week series; each class is generally 2.5 hours long. You may also choose from an intensive one-day Saturday class.  Choose whatever location/class that fits your schedule.

Monday or Thursday Evening classes, 6:00 to 8:30 pm (four-week series)
Prepared Childbirth Course Fee: $100 per couple; fee includes course materials.

Saturday one-day intensive class held monthly, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm
Prepared Childbirth Course Fee: $100 per couple; fee includes course materials, snacks and beverages; registrants are responsible for their own lunch.

Classes are held at a variety of times/locations; date will be confirmed at the time of paid reservation. Please register early, so you can attend class(es) during or after your 28th week of pregnancy.  Space is limited.

Sibling Classes

Offered at Allentown and Bethlehem Campuses

Celebrate the “big brother” or “big sister” through crafts and activities.  This special experience is open to 2 ½ to 8 year old children (and their parents) who are about to become a big brother or big sister.  Through stories, videos and activities, the children prepare for new baby’s arrival by learning the differences, abilities and needs of infants in an age-appropriate program. Siblings-to-be also get a tour of the maternity unit so they know mommy and baby will be in a safe, comfortable environment where they are able to visit.  (Tour and visiting may be suspended during times when visitors are restricted due to influenza or other communicable disease outbreaks.)  A 4x6” photo of your child is needed for class activity. Please bring your camera for great photo opportunities!

Sibling Class Course Fee: $25 for first sibling and $10 for each additional child within the same family

Prenatal Breastfeeding Class: Feeding your Baby the Perfect Food

Offered at Allentown and Bethlehem Campuses

The St. Luke’s New Beginnings Family Birth Center acknowledges the many benefits of breastfeeding for infants, women and their families. By providing education before your baby’s birth, we hope to assist you in preparing for the important job of breastfeeding.
This informal class will cover:

• Tips to wake a sleepy baby
• Potential problems and solutions
• Pumping and storing basics

Breastfeeding Support Group

Offered at the Allentown Campus ONLY

Join fellow moms for encouragement, tips and support.  Breastfeeding peer support groups play an important role in helping you to attain your breastfeeding goals.  The group is hosted by a Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Certified Breastfeeding Counselor and/or Registered Nurse.  Keep learning about breastfeeding as an educational topic will be discussed at each meeting. Your baby will have the chance to interact with other babies, while moms get to socialize with other moms. Offered most 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at the Allentown Campus ONLY.

Buckle Baby Right: Car Seat Safety Class

Offered at Allentown and Bethlehem Campuses

The Car Seat Safety Class will provide current information regarding Pennsylvania's Child Passenger Law, best practice recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics for transporting children and important car seat installation tips.  Surveys have shown that nine out of ten car seats are not installed or used correctly.  Lean what you can do to avoid the most common mistakes from a Certified Child Passenger Seat Technician.

Grandparenting and Caregivers: The Rules Have Changed

Offered at the Bethlehem Campus Only

This class is designed for expectant grandparents and their families.  Expectant parents may accompany interested grandparents, if they desire.  The ideal time to attend this program is immediately prior to baby's due date or soon after the baby is born.  The session will update grandparents on current ideas in childbirth and childcare, prepare grandparents for their role and familiarize them with the hospital's family-centered policies and environment.  There will be adequate time for discussion and questions about various topics.  A tour of the New Beginnings Family Birth Center and Nursery will be included based upon room availability.
