Certified Nurse-Midwives

Certified Nurse-Midwives

For centuries, Midwives have provided care to women during childbirth. Midwives over time have evolved into medical practitioners who offer this care to women not just during the birthing process, but also throughout their reproductive lives.

Today there are more than 7,000 Certified Nurse-Midwives practicing in the U.S. They attend about 10% of all births in this country (with the numbers on the rise).

What is a Certified Nurse-Midwife?

A Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) is trained as both a nurse and midwife. A CNM has a RN license, often with a BS or even MS, and must successfully complete a midwifery program. They must also pass a national certification exam from the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) and receive a state license to practice.

The main function of a Midwife is to provide care to women during pregnancy, labor and delivery. However, midwives today do not just attend births - they also offer many types of gynecologic care.

Midwives can:

  • Provide well-woman gynecological care
  • Offer preconception counseling and preparation
  • Provide prenatal care
  • Manage healthy pregnancies and deliveries (those without known or reasonably anticipated medical complications)
  • Offer guidance with breastfeeding and other newborn care issues
  • Care for women who are going through menopause

Midwives work closely with women in making their own decisions about the birthing experience. Some women have reported that they are more satisfied about their ability to make decisions when they are assisted by a Midwife. Although Midwives are trained to provide certain medical procedures when necessary, they work closely with a Collaborative Physician at all times, wherein they routinely and comfortably consult, co-manage the patient or refer to the Physician depending on the circumstances of the pregnancy, such as for higher-risk pregnancies, operative vaginal delivery or Cesarean Birth.
